TL;DR

Shopify now lets any AI agent find, cart and sell products from millions of merchants without building its own catalog, cart or checkout. Four pieces do the work:

  • Shopify Catalog gives agents global product search with real-time price and inventory, exposed through an MCP server.
  • MCP UI resources render search results as interactive, themeable product cards inside the chat, including variants, bundles and subscriptions.
  • Universal Cart holds items from several stores in one cart that persists across conversations.
  • Checkout Kit embeds the merchant's own secure checkout inside the agent, with compliance handled by Shopify.

Since January 2026 these tools sit on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google. For brands the takeaway is simple: if your product data is clean and your store is opted into agentic channels, AI assistants can recommend and sell your products where shoppers already ask questions.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent, not a website, guides the buyer from question to completed order. The shopper describes a need in a chat, voice assistant or messaging app. The agent searches products, compares options, builds a cart and hands over a checkout, all inside the conversation.

Until recently, every developer who wanted this had to solve three hard problems alone:

  1. 1.Discovery: crawling and normalising product data from thousands of stores, with stale prices and stock.
  2. 2.Carting: tracking items across merchants and sessions.
  3. 3.Checkout and compliance: payments, taxes, shipping rules, and privacy and card-data regulations such as GDPR, CCPA and PCI DSS.

Shopify's agentic tools remove all three. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke framed the goal as making commerce plug into conversations without new checkouts or marketplace rules. For merchants it means a new sales channel. For developers it means shipping a shopping agent in weeks instead of quarters.

The Shopify agentic stack: four tools explained

Shopify's agentic stack has four layers: Catalog for discovery, MCP UI resources for display, Universal Cart for carting and Checkout Kit for payment. Shopify first announced Catalog, Universal Cart and Checkout Kit in August 2025.

ToolWhat it isWhat it does for an agentWhy it matters
Shopify CatalogA global product index exposed through an MCP serverSearches hundreds of millions of Shopify products with real-time pricing and inventoryNo scraping, no stale data, one integration for every Shopify store
MCP UI resourcesPre-built web components returned with search resultsRenders product cards in chat, handling variants, bundles and subscriptions with no extra client codeRich shopping UI in hours; themeable to match the agent's brand
Universal CartOne cart that spans many merchantsAdds, removes and keeps items across stores and across conversation sessionsShoppers can buy a kurta from one brand and juttis from another in one flow
Checkout KitAn embeddable version of the merchant's own Shopify checkoutLoads checkout inside the agent, combining merchant settings with the agent's brandingSecure, high-converting checkout; Shopify handles GDPR, CCPA and PCI DSS

What are MCP UI resources?

MCP UI resources are interactive product components that Shopify Catalog returns alongside search results, so an agent can show shoppable cards instead of plain text. Developers can theme them to match their app. When a shopper taps a variant or adds to cart, the component sends that action back to the agent as an intent.

What is an intent?

An intent is a structured message describing what the shopper just did in the UI — such as choosing size M or adding an item. The agent receives it and decides the next step, so the AI stays in control of the conversation instead of the widget.

How an AI agent sells a product, step by step

An agent-led sale runs from question to order in one conversation, with every shopper action returning to the agent as an intent.

  1. 1Shopper asks a question in chat, voice or a messaging app.
  2. 2Agent queries Shopify Catalog over MCP for matching products.
  3. 3Catalog returns results together with MCP UI resources.
  4. 4Product cards render inside the conversation, variants and all.
  5. 5Shopper taps a variant or adds to cart — the action returns to the agent as an intent.
  6. 6Agent replies, refines the search, or adds the item to the Universal Cart.
  7. 7Checkout Kit completes the purchase on the merchant's own checkout.

Steps 4 to 6 are the loop: every tap goes back through the agent, so the conversation — not the widget — decides what happens next.

Where MCP and UCP fit

MCP is how an agent talks to Shopify's tools; UCP is the shared commerce language those tools speak.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic, that lets AI models connect to external tools and data in one consistent way. Shopify Catalog and checkout are exposed as MCP servers, so any MCP-capable agent can call them.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for AI agents to discover, cart and buy from any merchant. Shopify and Google announced it on 11 January 2026 at NRF, with partners including Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. UCP covers the full journey from discovery to checkout to orders, and works over REST, MCP, Agent2Agent (A2A) and the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). Shopify's agent tools are UCP-compliant.

Three related launches matter for brands:

  • Agentic Storefronts: merchants set up product data once and Shopify surfaces it in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini.
  • Agentic plan: opens Shopify Catalog to brands on any platform, not only Shopify stores.
  • Native checkout in Google AI Mode: Google switched on UCP-powered checkout in AI Mode and Gemini on 11 February 2026, starting with US retailers.

UCP is not the only protocol. OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), launched in September 2025, powers checkout inside ChatGPT. Shopify supports both ecosystems, so a Shopify merchant does not have to pick a side.

What this means for Indian D2C brands

For Indian D2C brands, agentic commerce shifts the battle from ranking on Google to being the product an AI assistant recommends. When a shopper asks “best Ayurvedic hair oil under ₹500 for dandruff”, the agent reads structured product data, not your banner ads.

What changes in practice:

  • Product data becomes your storefront. Titles, descriptions, variants, metafields and reviews are what an agent reasons over. Thin or inconsistent data means you are skipped.
  • Conversion moves into chat. Shoppers who never visit your site can still buy, so attribution and retention need new tracking.
  • Support and sales merge. The same agent that answers “is this safe during pregnancy?” also takes the order, so your FAQs and policies must be accurate and machine-readable.
  • Rollout is uneven by market. The first native AI-chat checkouts went live in the US. Check your Shopify admin for which agentic channels are available to your store in India, and prepare data now so you are ready when they open.

Brands that treat this as a data and content project today will have a head start when Indian shoppers move from search boxes to assistants.

Agentic commerce readiness checklist

Use this 10-point checklist to make your store easy for AI agents to find, understand and sell.

  • Write product titles that state what the item is, for whom, and its key attribute (size, material, use).
  • Fill every variant option and keep inventory synced in real time.
  • Add metafields for ingredients, materials, dimensions, care and compatibility.
  • Write descriptions that answer buyer questions directly, not just marketing copy.
  • Use high-quality images with descriptive alt text on every product.
  • Publish clear shipping, returns and COD policies in plain language.
  • Keep reviews and ratings visible and current.
  • Opt into AI and agentic channels in Shopify admin where available.
  • Add FAQ and Product structured data on product pages for AI search engines.
  • Set up tracking to measure orders and assisted sales from AI channels separately.

How Gwiksoft helps brands go agentic

Gwiksoft has been a Shopify Partner since 2022 and builds agent-ready stores for D2C brands. We work on both sides of agentic commerce: making your catalog easy for AI assistants to sell, and building the conversational layer on top of it. Everything below is delivered as a service engagement under a signed agreement.

  • Agentic readiness audit: we review product data, metafields, policies and structured data against the checklist above, then fix the gaps.
  • Custom agent builds: MCP-based agents using Shopify Catalog, Universal Cart and Checkout Kit, for brands and marketplaces that want their own AI shopping experience.
  • Conversational support: an agent that answers shopper questions from your store's own data and hands the hard ones to a person, scoped and logged so nothing is invented.
  • Catalog and data engineering: the metafield model, variant hygiene and structured data that decide whether an assistant can describe your product at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI agents really sell products on Shopify?

Yes. Using Shopify Catalog, Universal Cart and Checkout Kit, an AI agent can search products, build a cart and complete checkout on the merchant's own Shopify checkout, inside the conversation.

What are the three main Shopify tools for AI agents?

Shopify Catalog for product discovery, Universal Cart for multi-store carts, and Checkout Kit for embedded, compliant checkout. MCP UI resources add the in-chat product display.

Is Checkout Kit secure?

Yes. Checkout Kit loads the merchant's real Shopify checkout, and Shopify handles payment security and compliance requirements such as PCI DSS, GDPR and CCPA.

Can I customise how products and checkout look inside my agent?

Yes. MCP UI components can be themed to match your app, and Checkout Kit combines your agent's branding with the merchant's checkout settings. The merchant's business rules stay in place.

How does an agent handle product variants?

Catalog's MCP UI components handle variants, bundles and subscriptions automatically. Each shopper selection returns to the agent as an intent, and the agent decides the next step.

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?

UCP is an open standard, co-developed by Shopify and Google and launched in January 2026, that lets AI agents discover, cart and buy from any merchant using REST, MCP, A2A or AP2.

Do Shopify merchants need to build anything to appear in AI assistants?

Mostly no. Merchants enable agentic channels in Shopify admin and Shopify handles the protocol work. The real effort is clean, complete product data.

Is agentic checkout available in India?

The first native AI-chat checkouts launched in the US. Availability varies by channel and market, so check your Shopify admin and prepare your catalog now.
